Exploded Sounds is an online re-imagining of my physical sound installation The Exploded Sound, shown in the Jacopic Gallery in Ljubljana in 2012.
Each of the 64 loudspeakers contains a fragment of the overall sound: a single sinewave partial or a brief looping pattern of two or three frequencies.
As you pass under each speaker you hear its contents lift out of the texture.
In the original installation the overall sound of the chord is reassembled only in the brain of the listener. In the online version of course the reassembly happens in the loudspeaker/headphones. Binaural positioning gives a good sense of how movement through the space affects the balance of the partials.
You can also replace one source chord with another. Three are choral in character and three are orchestral.
Pressing the 'r' button initiates a gradual replacement of partials one 'speaker' at a time. (this was a continuous process in the original but is user-initiated in the online version).
